March is finally here and warmer weather is just around the corner!☀️ That also means it's Women's History Month. To celebrate, we're highlighting the Patapsco Female Institute - located right here in Old Ellicott City!
Perched at Ellicott City’s highest point, the Patapsco Female Institute offered a revolutionary curriculum to young women from the years 1837 to 1891. The school earned a national reputation for its inclusion of botany, chemistry, and mathematics in a time where it was believed that women could not learn such subjects.
Thanks to the efforts and partnership with Howard County, the ruins of this grand example of Greek-revival architecture were stabilized and restored in 1995. The institute now serves as a landmark for women's history education, programs, and special events.
Have you visited the Patapsco Female Institute before? Did you learn anything new about women’s history? Let us know!

Strange that there is no mention of the Friends of the Patapsco Female Institute who were so instrumental in saving this.
