The gateway into historic Ellicott City from the east side of the river is enhanced by a lovely native plant garden overlooking the Patapsco River. This community garden is cared for by Master Gardeners, Patapsco Heritage Greenway, and community members. The site has serves as the background for prom pictures and engagement proposals, as well as a peaceful COVID retreat. Once a weedy parking lot, the attractive waterfront garden was privately funded and initially planted in 2010. With grants and dedication, volunteers have repaired flood damage, created a Monarch Waystation, and added interpretive signage.
Each spring this dedicated group of volunteers coordinate and undertake the tasks necessary to WAKE UP the Oella Garden and maintain this beautiful feature for all to enjoy–but they need help! Volunteers are needed for raking, weeding, and mulching to prepare the garden for the 2022 growing season and Ellicott City’s big 250th commemoration year. Experience is valued but not necessary. Grab your favorite rake, work gloves, and water bottle and join the fun as they get this popular site in tip-top shape for the many visitors who will make it a stop on their way into town.
