Ellicott City was established in the late 1700s as an agricultural mill town. Shortly after establishing the town with a mill, the Ellicott brothers also set up the first distillery using 3, 150-gallon pot stills.
Ellicott City continued to grow with grain mills and nearby industry. The distillery they setup eventually disappeared. During the 1920s the Prohibition movement swept the country and alcohol began to be produced illegally. Main St, Ellicott city was called “A Bootlegger’s Paradise” because of the ease that one could get alcohol.
Ellicott Distilling Co. is the first legal distillery in Ellicott City – following the inspiration of the original Ellicott brothers and bootleggers from Prohibition. The town also has a beautiful Main St, which offers excellent options for dining, antique hunters, for strollers and shoppers alike. Enjoy a classic cocktail in our distillery and then take a stroll along Main St. We hope to see you soon.
