The COVID-19 pandemic transformed the WHC from a conventional, brick-and-mortar practice on Main Street in Ellicott City to an exclusively virtual therapy experience.
Hi, I’m Nancy Wikes, psychotherapist and owner of the Women’s Healing Center, and I welcome you on your journey of self-exploration and discovery. From an early age, I have been fascinated by the female experience, beginning with observations of my own mother. Like so many before her, she followed the rules, did what was expected, and believed that her commitment to societal dictates would lead to forever-after happiness. She graduated from high school, took a job as a secretary, and waited for Mr. Right to come along and marry her, thus validating her existence. My mom certainly found some joy along the way, but carried a pervasive sense of disillusionment for having trusted “the rules” and encountered much disappointment, betrayal, and rejection.
Today’s women have more freedom, more options, than ever before and yet still feel trapped, fearful, and full of self-doubt. Why is that? Because we’re still inundated with negative messages about how we should look, behave, think, and feel and, let’s face it, trying to conform to all of it is impossible and leaves us feeling bad about ourselves. And those messages come at us from everywhere: social media, family, friends, coworkers, you can’t escape their reach.
